Biography

Jonathan Sepulveda began working as an associate professor of psychology for the Psy.D. program at Felician University in August 2021. He earned his Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Boston College in August 2021. He completed his APA accredited internship training at Jacobi Medical Center that 4-month rotations in the comprehensive addiction treatment center (CATC), bariatric surgery and oncology, and an adult inpatient unit. Additionally, he completed a year-long rotation in collaborative care at Jacobi Medical Center. His research interests are examining the relationship between ethnic-racial identity development and purpose, mentorship, and other positive youth outcomes.

Dr. Sepulveda completed three yearlong pre-doctoral externships on a child inpatient unit at Cambridge Health Alliance, outpatient clinic at Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans’ Hospital, and community mental health clinic at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Chelsea. Additionally, Dr. Sepulveda earned his M.A. in mental health counseling from the City University of New York, Baruch College in 2013. He was trained in functional family therapy (FFT) and administered FFT as an in-home therapist at Community Counseling and Mediation in Brooklyn from 2013-2014. He then worked as a youth and family counselor at Esperanza New York from 2014-2016. He became a licensed mental health counselor in August 2014 in New York. Finally, Dr. Sepulveda received yearlong-seminars and training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills at Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans’ Hospital and MGH Chelsea, respectively.

Dr. Sepulveda’s research activities include roundtable discussions, workshops, and symposia at various psychological conferences. In addition, Dr. Sepulveda has co-authored several publications that focused on purpose development, introduction of a youth purpose program, and evaluation of the aforementioned youth purpose program. Finally, his dissertation, Investigating the relationship between Ethnic Racial Identity and student engagement through mental health and purpose, investigated the underlying mechanisms for the relationship between ethnic-racial identity and student engagement as well as any differences of those mechanisms across ethnic-racial groups.

Dr. Sepulveda began teaching as a teaching assistant at Baruch College in an undergraduate course titled Psychology across the Lifespan. Dr. Sepulveda taught as a lab instructor for two years at Boston College; this lab focused on developing the clinical skills (e.g., reflective listening, suicide assessment) of students enrolled in a Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling program. Dr. Sepulveda also taught an Applied Adolescent Development course to students enrolled in Masters of Education, School Counseling, and Mental Health Counseling programs. While at Boston College, Dr. Sepulveda was awarded the Donald J. White Teaching Excellence Award for Graduate Teaching and completed the Apprenticeship in College Teaching program in 2019 and 2020, respectively.
