COVID-19 Situation Reports

The Latest Information from Felician University on COVID 19

August 15th, 2020

Dear Golden Falcons,

Felician University is reopening for the Fall semester as scheduled!

In compliance with New Jersey Governor Murphy’s August 12, Executive Order # 175, Felician will reopen this Fall semester as defined in our Return to Campus Plan; Residence Halls, Dining Halls, libraries and gathering spaces will be available to all members of the community while observing the necessary State mandated protocols of social distancing and wearing of face masks at all times. We are pleased the State positivity levels of COVID-19 have decreased significantly making this possible. I am confident our community will return Felician Strong, and ready to do all that we can for the safety of one another in the coming weeks.

While we are moving forward with opening our campuses, out of an abundance of caution and with concern for the good health of our entire community, as we announced last week, ALL classes will begin either fully online (as scheduled) or virtual on Wednesday, August 26, 2020.

In accordance with the Governor’s order, Felician University will move to on campus, in person instruction using a Hyflex Hybrid course delivery on Monday, September 21, 2020.

This means that for the first seventeen days of the Fall 2020 semester, all classes will be delivered virtually, with the exception of designated labs, clinicals, and courses requiring hands on experiences that cannot be provided virtually. On Monday, September 21, those courses originally listed as Hyflex Hybrid will return to face to face and synchronous classroom delivery. Courses originally listed as “Online” and “Virtual” will remain so.

All University offices and support services will begin to return to campus during the next week. We will continue to provide assistance virtually and by appointment. A schedule for staff return to campus will be made available early next week.

Our return to campus will include a “de-densification” for each building, along with the protocols outlined in our Campus Reopening Plan. These protocols include utilizing the CampusClear daily wellness self-screener, daily temperature screening, completing mandated COVID-19 training, social distancing, the mandatory wearing of face coverings, and adherence to hand sanitization guidelines.

I also encourage all of you to get a Flu Shot this fall. This has been strongly recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). As in past years, we will be offering flu shots on campus by appointment. This year Felician University is waiving the Flu Shot fee that is normally charged. So please take advantage of this “free giveaway” opportunity for the health and wellness of our community, and make sure you continue to check your Felician email for appointment instructions.

Our Return to Campus Plan, submitted to the State of New Jersey, is available on our website. The Felician community will receive a more detailed Return to Campus Plan on Monday, August 17. The Plan includes the Falcon Pledge that we are asking everyone to sign. The Plan also includes the form for accommodations needed due to the pandemic. Directions for completing both of these documents can be found in the Plan as well.

We are all looking forward to welcoming you back to a vibrant campus, knowing that we are caring for one another by following the policies and protocols in place for our health and safety, and the safety of everyone in our Felician University community. Our Felician core values guide us in all we do, and living them together keeps us Felician Strong.

Once again, I offer heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all the administrators, staff and faculty who have worked tirelessly to develop a safe Return to Campus Plan and to organize our campuses so that all mandated precautions are in place and ready for our return.

See you soon, on campus with our masks on! Peace and All Good,

Sylvia McGeary, Ph.D.

Acting President

8/6/2020

Dear Felician University Community,

I know this summer has not been an easy one for any of us, and we all greatly anticipate a safe and healthy start for our Fall semester. The global pandemic continues to cause a great deal of uncertainty in every aspect of our lives, especially as we respond to the ongoing changes in regulations and protocols from the State of New Jersey and other authorities. The purpose of my letter today is to provide you with the current, most up to date status of our efforts to reopen our Felician University campuses this Fall.

As you may know, we have been diligently working within the guidelines from local, state and federal authorities over the past several weeks to provide you with the best possible plan for our reopening. The Felician University Return to Campus Plan has been submitted to the State and can be found on our website www.felician.edu. At this time, the State of New Jersey remains in Stage 2 of its multi-phase reopening plan. Stage 2 mandates very limited in-person learning and working, with an emphasis on the virtual or remote component.

Our residence halls will open on schedule. If you have already received your housing assignment, you will be welcome to move in on August 11 for international and out of state students except for New York and Connecticut, and August 20 to 25 for all other students.

Courses will be delivered using the Hyflex Model as has been explained in previous communications and during the President’s Hours meetings throughout the summer. However, we are making one MAJOR CHANGE. Rather than begin with face to face classes on August 26, most courses will begin using the virtual component of the Hyflex Model. That is to say, since we are anticipating the State of New Jersey will be remaining at Stage 2 of its reopening plan, most courses must start using the virtual component (Zoom) and will move to on-campus delivery once New Jersey’s reopening plan moves to Stage 3. We are anticipating this to happen sometime in September.

The pandemic has touched all of us and continues to fuel uncertainty in all aspects of our lives. This is why we have worked to ensure that we are constantly delivering the most up to date information to all of you. We are very much aware of all of your concerns, especially the ones voiced by students and faculty at the various President’s Hours, and Faculty sessions these past two weeks.

Our Felician core values call us to keep the health and safety of each member of our community and an awareness and concern for one another’s well-being, at the heart of all we do. At this time, the State has mandated the continuation of Stage 2 given the increase in reported cases of COVID-19. The University will maintain all of our academic, student support, administrative services, operational activities, and health & safety protocols in our vibrant University environment.

  • Residential Living and Dining Services will be provided to those approved to live on campus (grab and go meals with outdoor seating in compliance with social distancing).
  • Academic Advising, Center for Academic Success & Effectiveness Services, Tutoring, Counseling, Career Services, and Library Services will be provided on campus and virtually or online with posted hours for appointments in all three modalities.
  • Student Engagement Activities will continue in multiple modalities with designated spaces for outdoor activities on both campuses while observing social distancing and other protocols. All areas of the University are collaborating to provide an array of enjoyable Felician “hands on experiences” for you when you return to campus.
  • Certain Lab Sessions, Nursing Clinicals and Education Supervisory Observations will be conducted on campus.

I want to assure all of you that as I write this message, my utmost concern is the health and safety of the entire Felician University Community. Our Felician Franciscan understanding of being in right relationship and standing in solidarity with one another demands that we ensure we are doing everything possible to keep everyone safe and healthy while providing you with the optimal Felician educational experience.

We will do this The Felician Way:

  1. Our Residence Halls will open on August 11 for international and out of state students except for New York and Connecticut, and August 20 to 25 for all other students.
  2. Dining Services will be available on the Rutherford campus using a “grab and go” system with outdoor dining opportunities available “under the tent” outside the Dining Hall and at other locations on campus.
  3. Classes will be delivered with the Hyflex Model using the Zoom component until such time as the State of New Jersey moves to Stage 3 of the reopening plan.
  4. Designated Science Labs, Nursing Clinicals, and Education observation and supervision will be held face to face.
  5. On-campus services will be available by appointment during posted hours. At all other times, these services will be available virtually or online.
  6. We will maintain all cleaning and sanitizing protocols that we have put into place as stated in our Felician University Return to Campus Plan.
  7. We will return to the on-campus component of the Hyflex Model course delivery for all indicated courses as soon as New Jersey moves to Stage 3 of the State’s reopening plan.

We understand that given this new information, some students may need to change their plans. We will work with you to ensure that each of you is able to enjoy the entire Felician University experience – The Felician Way.

Please contact the appropriate offices with any concerns or questions.

For Housing:

For the Registrar’s Office:

For the Office of the President:

At this time, I would like to thank all of the members of our community who have spent numerous hours working through guidelines, regulations and protocols in order to provide the best possible way for us to return to campus this Fall. Their efforts reflect our goal of providing you the personalized University experience for which Felician is known. I look forward to being with you as we begin this new Fall semester together – and I wish you and your families continued good health during this challenging time.

In Peace and All Good,

Sylvia McGeary, Ph.D.

Felician COVID-19 Updates

Dear Felician University Community,

I am writing today to update everyone on the progress of our return to campus planning that will allow us to open in the fall and welcome everyone back to Felician University.

As we all know these past few months have been challenging and they have left us with a wealth of experience and new-found knowledge regarding the current health pandemic. It is my hope that you will recognize that experience and knowledge as you read this overview of our progress. We are grateful to the Felician University community for shifting quickly in March to meet Governor Murphy’s Executive Order and have taken the lessons learned and incorporated them in our fall plan.

The faculty, administration and staff have been working in preparation for our return to campus. First, our faculty participated in virtual workshops throughout the month of June so they will be able to utilize classroom technology and teaching techniques that will assist all our students in a richer classroom experience, be it on- ground or virtually. Administration has been in planning mode since late April, with several teams working to develop the component parts of our reopening plan. We are aiming for publication of the plan by July 15, 2020. Staff have been hard at work determining the safest arrangements for residence halls in compliance with State, CDC and Felician requirements. Registration and virtual SOAR events have been on-going and all of us are looking forward to seeing everyone back on campus in August.

Please remember everything we plan is contingent upon the directives we receive from State and Federal officials and the County Health Department. We are in daily communication with those offices in order to ensure the most up to date information possible is incorporated in our planning.

Academic Instruction

Felician’s focus has always been to ensure that every student is engaged in high quality instruction regardless of the modality of delivery. During the summer, 40 of our classrooms will be outfitted with new technology to enable the Hy-flex hybrid modality of instruction. This will allow students to participate in their scheduled classes on-ground for part of the course and in a synchronous environment (using Zoom) at other times during the course. This arrangement is intended to provide all students with the safest learning environment, allowing for six feet of social distancing and mandatory use of face masks. Students choose which modality is right for them, in consultation with their instructor. We are planning a Fall semester start date of Wednesday, August 26, 2020. Due to restrictions on the population density in each classroom, we have added additional sections of our course offerings in the evenings and on Saturdays, and as spacing permits. Again, health, safety, and academic progress are our biggest concerns and making use of evenings and Saturdays ensures our ability to provide for both.

Our fall academic calendar has been adjusted to run on-ground using the Hy-flex hybrid model through to the Thanksgiving break which begins on Wednesday, November 25. Classes will resume ONLY virtually or on-line on Monday, November 30 through final exams. Students may request the opportunity to remain in the residence halls through Final Exam Week. Details for the request process will be provided at a later date.

On Campus Housing

Our plans for on campus housing are being developed in alignment with the state directives that call for reduction in the population density in the residence halls. Demand for fall housing is strong and we are prioritizing housing for new students; students with housing vulnerabilities and out of state and international students. As in the past, hotel accommodations in the immediate vicinity of the University have also been secured with campus shuttle service providing students with the ability to reside in a community environment. The Ave also continues to be an option for upperclassmen.

Student Support Services and Student Activities

Student support services will continue to be available either on ground or online, by appointment. Student activities are being planned with the well-being and safety of all members of our campus community in mind. So, programming will respect social distancing and the avoidance of large group gatherings. The unfortunate effect of being diligent about health and safety is that our athletic events will be held without spectators, as will be the case for most colleges and universities.

Return of Employees to Campus

While all of us have been working on the Felician virtual campus, the University is planning a phased return to campus for employees beginning August 3, 2020. All employees will take an online training module with information developed to assist everyone in understanding health and safety protocols. Necessary workplace changes will also be addressed in this training program. Additional details will be provided in the Felician University plan for reopening campus.

Returning to campus will be different for all of us. We will be wearing face masks, practicing social distancing and adhering to sanitization and hand washing protocols each day. But we will be doing it the Felician Way so that we can protect one another as we continue to engage in day to day living and learning.

As you can see, many people have been hard at work planning for our safe, secure reopening in August. Anticipation for all that has been noted above is high among those of us who are doing this work. We are all looking forward to being back on campus.

We are looking forward to celebrating Convocation with our Class of 2024 on Sunday, August 30, 2020. We can’t wait to see our newest Felician Alums back on campus for Senior Week (September 7-12), the Baccalaureate Mass (September 11) and Commencement on September 12, 2020. Most of all, we are just waiting to welcome our entire Felician University community back to campus.

Our Felician Core Values and our University Mission tell us that we live in relationship with one another – pursuing knowledge and a love for learning and we do that to be able to go out into the world and transform our part of the world for the good of all people. Fall anticipation brings with it hope that we will be safe together on campus to continue this important work.

Be well and stay safe!

Sincerely,

Sylvia McGeary, Ph.D. Acting President

Dear Felician Family,

We are entering week six of “VIRTUAL FELICIAN U” and my thoughts are with you each day as if we were together on our campuses. My first hope is that you and those you love are healthy and safe – if a bit weary of this new way of living we were thrust into due to the COVID-19 health crisis. We each must hold HOPE in our hearts and minds as we will get through this!

Secondly, I want to share with you some important University updates:

  • 2020-2021 TUITION FREEZE. Given the financial turmoil students and their families are likely facing, Felician has taken action to FREEZE tuition, fees, and room and board costs for the upcoming 2020-21 academic year. If you have received a financial aid award letter, it will likely be revised to reflect this decision to not increase costs for this next year.
  • IMPORTANT FELICIAN SURVEY.  Our transition to a virtual university was foisted upon us all. I am so very proud of how we have adapted. That being said, we need to gain an understanding of what is and is not working so that improvements can be made. A survey is being distributed to all students, faculty, and staff in an email from Dr. Bob Clougherty, VP of Technology, Design & Innovation.  Only those with Felician accounts can complete the survey, you can respond only once, and the survey is completely anonymous.  It contains about 6 questions and should take just a few minutes to complete.  PLEASE complete the survey.  Your responses are very important to our future planning.
  • SUMMER AND FALL REGISTRATION.  With the Summer and Fall semester registration period open, I encourage students to register. At this time, all summer classes are being planned to be virtual. We are planning to return to campus in the Fall! Of course, should there be a need to adjust due to potential waves of the pandemic, we will adjust accordingly.
  • GRADUATING SENIORS.  To our SENIORS, please know we share your sense of loss in not being able to be together at this time to celebrate your success. But we will! Meanwhile, if you are seeking employment be sure to keep in touch with our Office for Career Development Services. Firms are now participating in virtual job fairs – so now is the time to work with Career Services experts on your virtual interview skills! We will be sending you further information about Commencement which now likely needs to be postponed until September.

Lastly, given the number of lives that are passing due to COVID-19, it is inevitable that some in our community will also succumb. I am sad to advise you of the sudden passing of one of our long term Chartwells dining services employees, Dave Jarvis, from what is believed to be COVID -19.  Dave was employed since 2011 on the Lodi campus serving our students, faculty and staff daily. He was a shy individual, however, he found his comfortable place in cooking for and assisting those in our community.  He was last on campus March 13th. May Dave rest in peace.

Let’s continue to pray for our healthcare workers and all those who jeopardize their safety for the greater good. Blessings of patience, health and hope as we continue to show our solidarity by following health expert guidelines.

In peace and good health,

Dr. Anne M. Prisco

President

**Important March 21, 2020 COVID-19 Update**

From President Anne Prisco, Ph.D.

Dear Felician Community,

Today, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy issued an Executive Order for all residents to “stay home” beginning 9pm Saturday, March 21.  This order is designed to increase physical distancing in accordance with CDC directives to slow community spread of the coronavirus, COVID-19.

I want to ensure you that Felician University students, faculty, and staff are already engaged in measures that align with the Governor’s order and are following guidelines that are designed to keep us all safe.  University courses have transitioned to online learning and will remain online throughout the Spring semester.  Resident students have returned home and those who have met specific requirements remain on campus under enhanced restrictions.  Only essential staff remain on campus.

Importantly, as our students are learning and studying online, I want to remind you that University resources have transitioned to online also and are available to assist you during this time:

In addition to asking all residents to stay home, today’s order from the Governor mandated an end to all public gatherings and detailed non-essential businesses that must cease in-person operations.  More information on these restrictions and New Jersey’s continuing response to COVID-19 can be found at https://covid19.nj.gov/.

As this pandemic continues to unfold across the world, I ask that you maintain self-care and practice CDC recommended measures to prevent the virus from spreading including frequent handwashing and social distancing.  The health and safety of Felician students, faculty and staff, as well as, the greater community are in our prayers as we cooperatively address this health crisis.  We find strength in our Felician Franciscan values as we work to secure our mission and keep our community strong.

In peace and good health,

Anne M. Prisco, Ph.D.
President, Felician University

Dear Felician Students, Colleagues, Family, and Friends,

As we deal with the evolving and unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, Felician continues to make the changes and difficult decision-making this situation requires. I write to you today to share new and necessary decisions that are not unexpected, but are disappointing to us all.

In light of recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state and local authorities to minimize in-person interactions and gatherings, Felician will continue online learning for the remainder of the Spring semester. All University-sponsored Spring events will be canceled, postponed or transitioned to a virtual format until further notice.

I know our seniors and their families are anxious to hear about our plans for Commencement. We are committed to honoring our seniors when that becomes possible. Our Commencement Committee is dedicated to exploring all options that will be meaningful and celebratory for our graduates and their families including the traditional senior week activities, Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement ceremonies. We would love to have this the weekend of June 26 & 27; or if we must wait until Fall, September 11 & 12. Please know, that once you have met your degree requirements, you will be receiving your diploma regardless of when Commencement occurs.

STUDENTS, I am asking you for your continued cooperation for the following:

  • Please remain home. We care deeply about your safety and wellbeing, and the experts assure us that the best way to protect yourself and your family is to remain home. If you or your belongings remain on campus, arrangements are being made to facilitate a process to empty our dorms in the safest way possible. The Office of Residence Life will be communicating with on-campus students shortly. If you must stay on campus, we will obviously accommodate you.
  • Remain FULLY engaged in your learning. Communicate with your faculty and advisors as we remain in a virtual format for the Spring Semester and register for Summer and Fall. The Academic Success Center remains available for virtual tutoring and support.
  • Practice good self-care. Many campus resources continue, including call-in telephone sessions with the Counseling Center.
  • Stay up to date with the latest information. Refer to Felician’s COVID-19 webpage for general updates and Commencement-specific updates; and your email and social media for ongoing Felician communications.

We are working diligently to resolve every detail to ensure the continuity of learning and maintain the strength of our Felician community. Understandably, uncertainty abounds, which is why we are working to stay connected with you through every area of the University and to sharing information as quickly as possible. I ask for your continued partnership and patience.

Disruption is uncomfortable and makes us all feel uneasy, but it is also a foundation for innovation, greater learning, and exercising the Felician Franciscan values that set us apart, empower our community, and will strengthen us in this uncertain time.

I am very grateful to our faculty and staff who have done an extraordinary job as they continue to deliver education and services to our students, which I am certain will continue through the semester. Thank you to our entire community for your ongoing support, continue to take care as we look to a safe and healthy future.

In Peace and Health,

Anne M. Prisco, Ph.D.
President

Dear Faculty, Students and Staff

You may be aware that Governor Murphy announced a series of new steps for New Jersey businesses and institutions, including higher education.

Please know that the steps Felician University took last week moving to online instruction comply with this Executive Order (EO) released earlier today. Universities have not been closed. They have been required to cease all in person instruction, which Felician has already done.

Thank you.

Office of Communications

As we closely monitor the public health updates and spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) throughout the United States and around the world, the health and well-being of our Felician students, faculty and staff, and the larger community is our top priority.

The situation is rapidly changing. After careful consideration of the latest information, we have made the decision to transition all courses to online instruction beginning Monday, March 16, 2020 until Saturday, March 28, 2020, to maintain the continuity of our education. Resident students are required to return home unless they meet the requirements for remaining on campus.

Dear Felician University Community,

Although there have been no reported cases of Coronavirus (COVID-19) on either the Lodi or Rutherford Campus, out of an abundance of caution, we are moving to online instruction. Felician University remains open and operational, and the semester continues.

Beginning on Monday, March 16th through Saturday, March 28th, classes will be held online. Our faculty have been working to prepare for this situation. Students will be contacted shortly regarding their individual courses of study. Students who need assistance with online learning can go to help.felician.edu or call the Felician Helpdesk at 201-554-0240.

Resident students will have the option of remaining on campus or going home. For those students who choose to stay on campus to continue their online learning, the dining hall and libraries will remain open. Amended guidelines for residence life will be in effect.

The safety of the Felician Community and the continuity of learning for our students are our highest priority. Our Felician Franciscan Values continue to guide us during this difficult time, and our commitment to our academic mission remains strong.

On behalf of the Administration, Faculty, and Staff we appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation. We will continue to be thoughtful and thorough in our response and keep the community informed of our decisions. Remember to visit the University website often for updates, information on Athletics events, and other schedule changes.

Finally, please join us in praying for those whose health and lives are impacted by this virus.

In Peace and Health,

Anne M. Prisco, Ph.D.
President

Dear Felician University Community,

Welcome back from Spring Break. As the media has been running 24/7 coverage regarding the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), we at Felician continue to monitor the situation. Be assured that our priority is to do all we can for your health and safety, and we are actively engaged in taking precautionary measures, as well as, making contingency plans.

Please be aware that while the risk of infection remains low, Felician University has launched appropriate procedures including advanced surface cleaning and disinfecting protocols across our campuses, and enhanced Dining Hall(s) sanitary procedures. Faculty are developing a course-continuity plan that will allow continued online instruction should the need arise. At the same time we encourage frequent hand-washing and other prevention measures recommended by the Center for Disease Control (CDC).

On March 4, 2020, the CDC made recommendations regarding student travel and protocols for testing and reporting any cases to the CDC. In addition, study abroad alerts were provided for countries upgraded to Warning Level 3. To best monitor our community in keeping with these standards we ask:

If you have traveled outside of the country, please notify us of where you have been. Click here to complete the Travel and Employment form regarding travel.

If you have traveled to any areas of concern (i.e. Italy, China), we ask that you return or remain home to “self-monitor” and “self-isolate” for the 14-day incubation period for the virus as recommended by the CDC, after which, with clearance from a healthcare provider submitted to our Student Health Center, you may safely return to campus.

We will provide regular updates guided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the New Jersey Department of Health.

Every Felician University decision regarding this evolving situation will be made with the best interests of our community in mind. We remain committed to best serve our community of students, faculty, staff and surrounding communities. Thank you for working with us to ensure the health and safety of our community.

Our most updated information can be found on the Felician website here.
