Initial Teacher Licensure Preparation Programs

At Felician, you will earn your Master of Arts and become prepared for dual licensure in only two years, whereas most schools offer lengthy five- or six-year programs to prepare students for one license only. You will prepare for state licensure in a General Education area and in Special Education, making you much more marketable to schools looking to hire new teachers. Earning your master’s degree at Felician will also make you eligible to earn a higher salary as a teacher than if you held a bachelor’s degree alone.

You can enter these master’s programs whether you already have a teaching license or not. All of our programs are nationally accredited and state-approved, with coursework that respectively satisfies the New Jersey Department of Education’s requirements for endorsement and certification. While Felician cannot grant certification, we prepare you with everything needed to achieve state certification. Once you complete your program, we recommend you to the New Jersey Department of Education as a perfect candidate for a Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing in your specific area, at which point the state reviews your candidacy and can issue a certificate.

We offer four Master of Arts in Education licensure preparation programs that get you started in the classroom right away:

“At the graduate level each has the option of earning a master’s degree MAED with the addition of Phase II by completing 15 credits in directed electives to satisfy the MAED requirement. Candidates can add Phase II courses while completing Phase I; however, it must be done with consent of faculty advisor. “

Clinical Practice

During your final year in the program, you will engage in Clinical Practice. During Clinical I, you will work in a classroom two days a week, and during Clinical II, you will work a full-time schedule of five days a week. You’ll gain hands-on experience that you can apply on your first day on the job, which is why Felician’s take on experiential learning is what makes our programs unique.

Praxis Prep

In order to begin teaching in classrooms and continue in the Education program, most students must take the Praxis exam, which demonstrates the needed knowledge for teaching in various subject areas. Some students may be exempt depending on their SAT and/or ACT scores. If you do have to take the exam, we help you prepare every step of the way. We offer plenty of resources and provide accommodation options for those in need. At Felician, you’re not on your own.

EdTPA Assessment

The state of New Jersey now also requires licensure candidates to complete a performance-based, subject-specific assessment. Your ability to plan, instruct, and assess are evaluated. Our program coursework is designed to prepare you to successfully pass this assessment and earn your license.

*All teacher candidates must select a co-major, have a 3.0 GPA, and must successfully pass the Praxis Core examination prior to the completion of Transition into Teaching course.

*All teacher candidates must take and pass all required Praxis II Licensure examinations prior to student teaching. In accordance with the NJDOE regulations, all student teachers must complete a full year student teaching internship and successfully pass the Pearson edTPA to be issued licensure at the time of program completion.

Program Phases

PHASE I GRADUATE INITIAL LICENSURE includes professional sequence coursework necessary to earn dual licensure.

PHASE II GRADUATE MASTER of EDUCATION Additional Elective Coursework Options to complete the Masters (15 credits):

To complete the graduate master’s program, each student will participate in 15 additional graduate credits in courses that are chosen together with the faculty advisor. The additional courses are chosen based on the student’s background and future goals of employment. These courses are taken within the School of Education.

“After a successful career in retail management, I made the difficult decision to leave the workforce and return to school to pursue my dream of becoming an educator. My journey to Felician started at a popular state university in New Jersey with a reputable education program but, it never felt like home.
