Felician Marks National Hispanic Heritage Month

Felician University is pleased to observe National Hispanic Heritage Month (NHHM), which runs every year from September 15 through October 15.

Felician University will spotlight the contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans in New Jersey and beyond throughout National Hispanic American Heritage Month.

Felician University has an Hispanic/Latinx student population of 35 % and has been designated as an Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). HSIs are accredited, post-secondary, higher educational institutions with at least 25% total full-time enrollment of Hispanic undergraduate students. The HSI designation makes Felician eligible for federal grants that support the University’s efforts to serve Hispanic Americans.

National Hispanic Heritage Month began as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson in 1968; President Ronald Reagan expanded it to a month in 1988. September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, with Mexico and Chile celebrating their independence days on September 16 and September 18.

Join us in honoring the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
