School of Education Field Experience/Seminar Policies and Requirements

All School of Education students are required to:

  1. Submit the required Field Placement Request Form by October 15th for spring field courses and March 15th for fall field courses. Field Placement Request Forms received after these dates are not guaranteed a field placement and may be removed from the corresponding course, causing a delay in the timeline for degree completion. Due to the challenges with securing appropriate placements, students who meet these due dates will be placed first.
  2. Submit the required documentation prior to the start of each semester (August 1st for fall semester field courses and January 1st for spring field courses).

Students enrolled in Transition into Teaching  (EDU 290 and EDU 657) are required to submit the following documents:

  • COVID-19 vaccination card
  • Negative Mantoux (tuberculosis) test results (completed within six months of the start of the field experience)
  • Criminal background check (Applicant Approval Employment History) issued by the Office of Student Protection

Students enrolled in professional sequence field courses are required to submit the following documents:

  • COVID-19 vaccination card
  • Negative Mantoux (tuberculosis) test results (completed within six months of the start of the field experience)
  • Criminal background check (Applicant Approval Employment History) issued by the Office of Student Protection
  • Substitute license
  • Passing scores on the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators tests (or qualifying SAT or ACT scores)

Students enrolled in Clinical Practice I are required to submit the following documents:

  • COVID-19 vaccination card
  • Negative Mantoux (tuberculosis) test results (completed within six months of the start of the field experience)
  • Criminal background check (Applicant Approval Employment History) issued by the Office of Student Protection
  • Substitute license
  • Passing scores on the Praxis II Subject Area Assessments
  1. Submit the required Field Experience Attendance Log after each field visit.
  2. Complete the Professional Dispositions Self-Evaluation by the midterm (October 15th for fall field courses and March 15th for spring field courses).
  3. Submit all required field-related assignments and evaluations during the timelines listed in each course syllabi.  A student who fails to submit  one or more of the required field-related assignments or evaluations will receive a grade of “Incomplete.” The “Incomplete” grade will remain until all the required assignments and/or evaluations have been properly completed and submitted to the course instructor. An incomplete grade must be reconciled within the proper time frame in accordance with Felician University policy. Please note, candidates will not be permitted to continue in the professional sequence of education courses with any outstanding incompletes or grades below a “B.”
  4. Complete all field hours associated with each professional sequence course . Please be advised that Clinical Practice I (EDU 400/401 and EDU 668/669) requires a minimum of two  full days per week in the field placement and Clinical Internship (EDU 403/404 and EDU 668/669) requires five full  days per week in the field placement for a minimum of 15 weeks.
  5. Attend the Clinical Practice I and Clinical Internship seminar courses each week during the year-long student teaching experience.
  6. Meet with their clinical supervisor and/or cooperating teacher following each observation.
  7. Achieve a grade of “B” or better in all professional sequence courses. If a student does not achieve a grade of “B” or better on the first attempt, he/she will need to repeat the entire course, including the field experience. The student will not be permitted to register for any subsequent professional sequence courses until he/she has repeated and successfully achieved a grade of “B” or better in the initial course. Please be aware that repeating a professional sequence course may impact the student’s status in the School of Education Program as well as a delay in the timeline for degree completion.  As stated in the Felician University Catalog, “The repeat grade becomes the official grade. The original grade and repeat grade appear on the academic transcript.” A student who does not achieve a grade of “B” or better after the repeat of a professional sequence course will be dismissed from the School of Education program.
  8. Make up any field absences by the end of the current semester. Candidates who do not satisfy the required field hours  by the end of the semester will be required to repeat the course and associated field experience.  Candidates may appeal this decision to the Associate Dean due to extenuating circumstances.

*Athletes must consult with and get approval from the Associate Dean regarding the timing of the year-long student teaching experience (Clinical Practice I and Clinical Internship) due to scheduling of their sport. Based on the season, candidates may need to adjust the semesters in which they complete these courses to accommodate the required field hours.

Clinical Practice I and Clinical Seminar Attendance Policies

For Seminar:

  1. Any unexcused absence will result in an F for the attendance and participation portion of the seminar grade.
  2. A student who is absent more than 20% of the required class time during the semester may be withdrawn from the course (seminar and field experience).

For Field:

  1. One excused absence is permitted, which must be made up in consultation with the cooperating teacher and seminar instructor. More than one field absence will result in an “F” for the attendance portion of the field grade.
  2. A student who misses more than 20% of the required number of clinical experience hours during the semester may be withdrawn from the course (seminar and field experience).
  3. Clinical field work may not be made up at the expense of schedule course time, as this is policy for all School of Education students.

* Extenuating circumstances will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Dean of the School of Education.
