SOBIS Professor Philip Rothman

Dr. Philip Rothman is happy to have joined the faculty in the School of Business and Information Sciences at Felician University, an institution he describes as, “student centric with a tremendous focus on academic excellence and providing an incredible level of support and care for our students.”

Professor Rothman started teaching Management courses at Felician University in September 2021, including Fundamentals of Management, Project Management, Leadership and Strategy, and Finance and Business Ethics classes. Dr. Rothman comes to Felician from Concordia College in New York, where he taught for 12 years and served as the Dean of the School of Business. Prior to teaching, Professor Rothman worked as a Risk Manager for JPMorgan Chase Bank, a position which focused primarily on ethics, including risk identification and mitigation, ensuring the integrity of the Bank’s books and records, compliance with key regulatory requirements, as well as employees adhering to internal policies and procedures.

In fact, most of Dr. Rothman’s research interests and publications have involved Ethics, and he continues to have a strong interest in both learning about and teaching Ethics, “in order to educate our students on this critical topic, providing them with the knowledge and tools necessary to make good ethical decisions in both their professional and personal lives.”

An integral part of Professor Rothman’s teaching philosophy is preparing students for their professional lives once they leave Felician. “I have always felt my job as a business teacher is providing students with the content knowledge and professional skill set to meet market demands and have successful careers.” Looking ahead, Professor Rothman is excited about developing a new Finance major in the School of Business and Information Sciences saying, “Finance is a growing field, and we are looking forward to providing our students with the financial education, skills, and tools needed to be successful in the finance field.”

Professor Rothman, who earned his EdD in Executive Leadership from St. John Fisher College and his MBA in Finance from Pace University, says the Felician Franciscan values of Respect for Human Dignity, Compassion, and Transformation have always been an important part of his teaching. “Respect and compassion for others, especially for those who are different from you, are what I was taught when I was younger, and something that I continue to espouse as a teacher.”

Respect at all levels is what Dr. Rothman found at Felician University with colleagues and staff who he says were supportive in helping him learn new systems and processes at his new Felician home. He also appreciates the professionalism and care of the administration and faculty of the School of Business and Information Sciences. But it all circles back to teaching with Professor Rothman saying, “Transformation is what good teaching is all about, encouraging students to have an open mind, think for themselves, as well as continue to improve their knowledge and skill set.”
