Felician University Increases Awareness of Human Trafficking
Rutherford, NJ – April 8, 2019 – A presentation and workshop on Human Trafficking Awareness will be held at Felician University’s Rutherford Campus in the Castleview Building on April 10th at 6 p.m. The event will feature a first-person story by a human trafficking survivor and will inform participants about “red flags,” or indicators, of possible human trafficking activities and ways to support survivors.
Andrew Fellows, Felician University’s Campus Minister and moderator of the event, said, “It’s a surprise to many that modern slavery exists all over the world and right here in our neighborhoods. We hope to raise awareness, promote healing, and affirm the dignity of all people. With so many of our students going into education, healthcare, and other fields where they may encounter victims of exploitation, we want people to be aware of the warning signs and have resources to turn to.”
About Human Trafficking
Human trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, and harbouring or purchase of persons for the sole purpose of exploitation. Twenty-one million people worldwide are victims of human trafficking. Currently, there are more human trafficking slaves in the world than the population of London, New York, and Los Angeles combined.
This event is hosted by the Blessed Mary Angela Institute, Campus Ministry, Student Development and Engagement, and Attitudes Against Violence. The joint efforts by these groups enable paticipants to engage in critical discussions for future prevention and vigilance.
Recognizing potential red flags and knowing the indicators of human trafficking is a key step in identifying more victims and helping them find the assistance they need. To request help or report suspected human trafficking, call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 or text “help” to BeFree (233733).
