Women’s Track & Field Athlete Leads Slate of Six Records
The Felician University women’s track & field team won three events and set six school records, including two each by junior Bri Balderas of Somerset, NJ at the Wolverine Last Chance Invitational, hosted by Essex County College at Newark Schools Stadium.
Balderas eclipsed two of the longest-standing Felician records, in the 800-meter and 1,500-meter runs, while capturing both races. Her 800-meter time bested the time of Kate Rohsler from 2016 by four seconds and in the 1,500-meter, Balderas took down Sabrina Roldan’s record time from 2017 by two seconds.
The Golden Falcons’ other victory came in the high jump, where freshman Jada Carroll of Ridgefield Park, NJ cleared the bar at a program record 1.59 meters. Classmate Talia Ferguson of Hasbrouck Heights, NJ was the runner-up at 1.48 meters, and she also would have broken the previous Felician standard of 1.45 meters by Jasmine Bruton.
Freshman Catherine Catipay of Woodbridge, NJ surpassed teammate Kayla Hightower of Norfolk, VA mark in the 400 meters, finishing fifth overall. Junior Alyssa Pompey of North Plainfield, NJ broke her own record in the hammer throw with a toss of 20.39 meters, and senior Sierra Epps of Somerset, NJ tied the long jump record of 5.00 meters set earlier this season by Aaniya Burroughs of Vineland, NJ.
In addition to Ferguson, the Golden Falcons received runner-up finishes from Catipay in the 800-meter and sophomore Ashley Linares of Passaic, NJ in the 1500-meter.
