Katie Asbery Named CACC September Student-Athlete
Felician University volleyball standout Katie Asbery was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Student-Athlete for September- the first to earn the award during the 2020-21 academic year as announced by Commissioner Dan Mara.
Katherine, or Katie as she likes to be called, hails from Mililani, Hawaii. She was introduced to Felician during high school while playing on a traveling club team. “They had set us up with a recruiting profile online, and I was talking to different schools, but then something about Felician just felt right, and I went with my gut and that’s how I ended up here.”
And she’s made the most out of her time here at Felician, being a standout in her sport earning the All-CACC Third-Team honors as a middle blocker last season. She started every match for the Golden Falcons who won the CACC North Division Regular Season Championship, and reached the semifinals of the conference tournament.
And while impressive, the Senior’s athletic achievements aren’t the only things that sets this biology major apart, because she’s also made her mark in the classroom maintaining a cumulative 3.76 grade point average. She’s been placed on the CACC All-Academic Team twice during her career and was inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma College Athlete Honor Society in 2020.
Katie has distinguished herself with various community service initiatives including traveling back home to Hawaii to volunteer with a coaching clinic where she taught basic skills to 30 children. Here in New Jersey she performs community service with the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) where she serves as Secretary. For the past three years she’s been part of the Hoboken Christmas Exchange bringing gifts, clothing, and other necessities to families in need, and also helped students at Felician University register to vote.
As for her future plans Katie says she might return to either Hawaii or Texas where she has a sister, and hopes to go to medical school. But no matter where she ends up or what she does Katie knows she will be taking her Franciscan Values with her. “It’s very important for me personally to give back and be kind to people, everyone.”
