Felician Graduate Jerry Vasto Called Up to the Colorado Rockies
Felician University graduate Jerry Vasto (2015) made his debut as a Colorado Rockie on June 10th, pitching against the Arizona Diamonbacks. Vasto was called up from the triple-A team, the Albuquerque Isotopes, the night before the big game and was surprised by the good news.
“It was pretty crazy,” Vasto shared with FelicianAthletics.com. “I was told the news after our game in Omaha. I had to go to my hotel room to get ready to head out to Denver early (Sunday) morning for the Rockies’ day game. I landed in Denver and went straight to Coors Field.”
It is the dream of most athletes to advance their careers and Vasto, hometown native from Atlantic Highlands, is no exception.
“Warming up for the game was everything you dream about,” he said. “It’s something that I will never forget. Once the game started and it was time to get ready in the bullpen, I just tried to treat it like any other game. But obviously, it’s different being in bigger stadiums with more fans. With it being my first game in the big leagues, there were definitely a little bit more emotions.”In his first appearance as a major-leaguer, Jerry Vasto pitched for 2/3rds of an inning, allowing three runs and recording his first official strikeout for the Rockies. He made sure to execute his key pitch, the slider.
