Celebrating Contingency Accreditation: Felician University’s Doctor of Psychology Program Achieves Milestone

Felician University has been granted accreditation by contingency for a Doctor of Counseling Psychology (Psy. D) degree by the American Psychological Association (APA).

The new program will prepare graduates to become entry-level health service psychologists, as well as license-eligible psychologists in the State of New Jersey.

Dr. Daniel Mahoney, Director of Graduate Counseling Psychology and Associate Professor of Undergraduate and Graduate Psychology, says the accreditation shows “Felician University is on par with other programs that have met this standard such as Seton Hall, Rutgers, Fairleigh Dickinson, Fordham, and Columbia University to name a few.”

The intense process of applying for accreditation started in 2019, took three full years, and was interrupted by COVID -19. Dr. Mahoney wants to share the credit with the other 2 members of the Psych department, Dr. Nouriman Ghahary and Dr. Maha Younes saying, “I did not do this by myself, I had an incredible core of faculty who helped me and were spectacular throughout, really fantastic in getting us through this process.”

The accreditation by contingency runs through 2026. Once Felician is fully accredited it will be a ten- year unconditional accreditation.

“So being accredited on contingency is a mark for the public that Felician’s program has met the basic requirements to provide good, high quality training for those interested in becoming a psychologist, and that we have made a commitment to students to provide good opportunities to be trained, said Dr. Mahoney.
