Nineteen Felician Student-Athletes Honored as Arthur Ashe Sports Scholars

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The periodical Diverse Issues in Higher Education has selected 19 Felician University student-athletes as 2017 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars. The award winners come from the sports of men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, women’s bowling, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s lacrosse, baseball and softball, and were announced in the Apr. 6 issue of the magazine.

Diverse Issues established the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Program, named for the late tennis star, in 1992 to honor outstanding undergraduate students of diverse and foreign backgrounds. Each winner must be a non-freshman who competes in an intercollegiate sport, maintains a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20, and is active on his/her campus or in the community.

Felician returns to participation in the program after a one-year hiatus, and its 19 honorees are a school record. The previous mark of 15 was established in 2014; the Golden Falcons earned at least 10 winners for the fifth consecutive year in which it has participated.

Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars are named annually, and Felician’s 2017 honorees are listed below. This marks Felician’s 14th year of participation in the program.

Felician is a member of NCAA Division II and competes in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.
