Felician University to Honor Acting Commissioner Jacquelyn A. Suárez at Commencement

RUTHERFORD, NJ – President Mildred A. Mihlon, Ph.D. and the Felician University Board of Trustees are proud to announce that Jacquelyn A. Suárez, Acting Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, will receive an Honorary Doctor of Letters degree and serve as the keynote speaker at this year’s Commencement. She will address the graduates during the ceremony, which will begin at 9:30AM on May 23 at The Rink at American Dream, East Rutherford, NJ.

Since 2021, Ms. Suárez has served as the Director of the Division of Local Government Services, providing technical and financial assistance to local governments. In 2023, she was appointed Acting Commissioner, becoming the first Hispanic commissioner to lead the DCA. In this role, Ms. Suárez oversees the department’s operational budget, federal disaster relief grant funding administration, and management of over 1000 employees. She also leads various departmental programs, including the divisions of Local Government Services, Housing and Community Resources, Codes and Standards, Fire Safety, Disaster Recovery and Mitigation, and the Offices of Information Privacy and Local Planning Services, as well as manages the Department’s affiliate agencies.

A New Jersey native, Ms. Suárez earned her Juris Doctor degree from Rutgers School of Law in Camden and her bachelor’s degree in communications, legal institutions, economics, and government from American University in Washington D.C. She is a member of both the New Jersey and New York bar associations, as well as the Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey.
