4 Steps to Professional Success

Step 1
  • Visit the Career Development web site
  • Meet with your career advisor – discuss academic, personal, and professional goals
  • Create a resume – highlight your professional achievements with the assistance of a career advisor
  • Complete an online career assessment to help you discover career paths and options
  • Join a campus organization in your area of interest – take a leadership role whenever possible
  • Explore our online database of volunteer, internships, part-time jobs, and full-time professional positions: free registration for students and alumni
  • Like us on social media: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn
Step 2
  • Declare your major
  • Meet with your career advisor – further discuss your academic, personal, and professional goals
  • Review your resume and cover letter – make contacts/network by talking with professionals in interesting careers
  • Shadow and meet with professionals in different careers that interest you
  • Become involved in volunteer projects and/or school activities related to your career interests
  • Attend Career Events
  • Practice interviewing and complete a mock interview

Step 3
  • Meet with your career advisor – further discuss your personal, academic, and professional goals
  • Pursue an internship in your area of interest; complete required internship agreement
  • Join a professional organization (student rates are cheaper!)
  • Attend career-related events on campus to speak with recruiters and representatives about available opportunities
  • Discuss career plans with faculty in addition to career development center staff
  • Ensure you have professional interview attire

  • Visit the Career Development Center homepage to keep up to date with programs, upcoming job fairs, and deadlines
  • Meet with your career advisor – finalize your professional and career goals
  • Be aware of all deadlines associated with applying for graduate school, completing an internship, or applying for a job
  • Speak to career advisors about graduate school applications – take standardized tests, write personal statement
  • Attend local, state, and online career fairs
  • Brand your resume to fit the industry professional’s expectations
  • Select and contact faculty and past employers to request professional references
  • Complete the graduate survey!
