Founders Day Gala Raised More than $440,000 for Student Scholarships

Felician College raised more than $440,000 at its 30th Annual Founders Day Gala held on April 25, 2012 at the Venetian in Garfield, NJ.

Dennis Daniels, VP, Wakefern Foods Inc., chaired the gala. Proceeds from the event will support Felician College’s Student Scholarship Fund and the New Jersey Food Council (NJFC) Scholarship.

Three prominent Felician College friends, Joe and Cheryl Marino of Saddle River and William Sumas of Monmouth Beach, were honored at the event with the 2012 Franciscan Legacy Award.

Joe Marino is president of Century 21 Construction, a managing member in M&M Realty, and founder and president of JMP Holdings. His wife Cheryl is a practicing dentist.

“Joe and Cheryl are always alert to those in need and they are involved in many charities wherever God leads them,” said Felician President Sister Theresa Mary Martin. “They are servants to many, from the United States to Africa, and they have made a difference.”

William Sumas serves as vice chairman for Village Supermarket Inc., one of New Jersey’s largest family-owned and operated ShopRite supermarket companies.

Sumas served as the Chairman of the Board of the New Jersey Food Council (2000-2007), a business trade association representing the major supermarket and convenience chains and many of the companies that provide food retailers with products and services in New Jersey. He is currently chair of the New Jersey Food Council Government Affairs Committee and is previous vice president of Coronet, formerly NACORE (National Association of Real Estate Executives).

"William Sumas is the quintessential born leader.  He shares his gifts wholeheartedly and never asks the cost," said Sister Theresa Mary Martin as she presented the Franciscan Legacy Award to him.

In addition to honoring a prominent member of the food industry, Felician’s annual gala acknowledges the current NJFC scholarship recipient. “Each year, the NJFC awards a full tuition, four-year academic scholarship to a deserving Felician College student who works in or has an immediate family member who is employed in the food industry,” said Daniels. “This year’s scholarship recipient is Sherine Olickal of Springfield, New Jersey.”

“Higher education equips an individual to contribute efficiently and effectively to society,” said Olickal.  “I consider it one of my greatest responsibilities after earning an excellent nursing education to bring light into the lives of those who suffer.”

Olickal is the daughter of Pauline George and Savio Thomas.  Her father is a chef at the Sheraton Edison Hotel, Raritan Center, in Edison, New Jersey.
