Three Felician Athletes Named to Academic All-America Teams
Three Felician College athletes have been named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Division II teams for the fall season as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Women’s soccer players junior Alysia Arcona and senior Jenn Hesse were chosen to the second team, while sophomore Keleenna Onyeka of the men’s squad garnered third-team honors.
Previously, there had been only four Academic All-Americans in the 17-year history of Felician athletics. The trio marks the first-ever Felician soccer players to be recognized.
"I'm extremely proud of both Alysia and Jenn," said Felician head coach Thomas Notte. "Just to play a sport and compete in college is an accomplishment, but to play at the level they both do, while at the same time excelling academically, is a tremendous achievement."
Arcona carries a 3.95 grade-point average as a double major in Elementary Education and English. A 5-foot-8 forward, she started all 17 games for Felician in 2012. She led the Golden Falcons in scoring with 27 points on 12 goals and three assists.
Hesse, a 5-foot-5 defender, registered one goal in 14 starts this season while helping Felician to a 1.60 team goals-against average and three shutout victories. She owns a 3.97 GPA while majoring in Criminal Justice.
Onyeaka carries a 3.91 grade-point average as an Accounting major. A 6-foot-3 defender, he started all 17 games for Felician in 2012. From the center back position, he led the Golden Falcons in goals (4) and points (8), and was a key component as all five of Felician's victories came by 1-0 scores.
"Keleenna's poise, confidence, and intelligence make him the ideal role model to represent all that is embodied in the definition of 'student-athlete,'" said Felician head coach Roger Stephens. "There is no better student-athlete to represent all that Felician College is and has to offer.”
