Felician College Professors Partner with Area Teachers
Recognizing that teaching is an ever-evolving profession, Felician College is committed to developing partnerships with local elementary schools to help teachers in their professional development.
Faculty members of the College’s Division of Education are providing daylong workshops with teachers in a variety of subject areas, including English Language Arts and Mathematics instruction and using iPods in the classroom. Felician’s faculty also present the latest research and teaching techniques on the Common Core Standards set by the State.
“The Felician College Division of Education is committed to serving the educational community, and our partnerships with area schools are a good vehicle for that service,” said Dr. Rose Rudnitski, Dean and Professor, School of Education.
Recently, Felician’s faculty provided an in-service workshop at St. Andrew the Apostle School in Clifton and Academy of the Most Blessed Sacrament and St. Paul’s School, both in Ramsey. Felician also has a similar relationship with a school in Managua, Nicaragua, where three faculty and Dr. Rudnitski provided two days of professional development this past summer on assessing student learning.
“Our students are also involved in the schools, providing after-school tutoring at several area elementary schools,” Dr. Rudnitski added. “The goal of these partnerships is to establish relationships that go beyond presentations. Our Division of Education seeks to become involved in the activities of local schools through participation of our students and faculty in school improvement projects and in helping teachers solve problems that they encounter in the classroom,” she said. “We want to be part of the solution.”
Dr. Rudnitski explained that in many programs, teacher candidates do not go into real classrooms until the semester before they student teach.
“They often feel unprepared when faced with a real classroom situation. In our program, they are in real classrooms all day once a week from freshman year through their senior year,” said Dr. Rudnitski, noting that teacher candidateswill have been in a variety of placements -- urban, suburban, special education, Catholic, and Charter schools – by the time they are eligible to student-teach.
“This is the gold standard in teacher preparation,” she said.
