Julie O'Connell, D. Litt Assistant Professor of English

I was Chair of Developmental Studies at Felician College from 2010-2013.  From 2008 to 2010, I taught composition and literature courses for the Department of English at Seton Hall University. From 2000 to 2010, I served as the Director of the Felician College Writing Lab.  During that time, I co-authored a corporate ESL curriculum which I taught at the Federal Reserve Bank in East Rutherford, NJ. I also developed and taught a ten week Praxis II preparation course for Teacher Education students.  Prior to these experiences, I worked as a Learning Specialist at Rutgers University, a Corporate Trainer teaching basic skills to employees, and a high school English teacher.

Field of Interest

I have taught courses in developmental writing, rhetoric and composition, literature, reading, ESL, and Business Communications. I have given numerous presentations on learning styles, study strategies, time management, test preparation, test taking, note taking, and reading skills for undergraduate students. I have a special interest in working with students who have learning disabilities and other kinds of academic challenges, such as Asperger's Syndrome. I am interested in new approaches to remediation and developmental education as well as the impact domestic poverty has on one's access to literacy skills.
