Your rights to privacy and confidentiality are taken seriously. Communications between the counselor and client are privileged, confidential, and safeguarded in our Center. Counseling records do not become part of the educational record. Counseling information is not released to anyone outside of the Counseling Center without a client’s written permission.
Confidentiality is guaranteed within legal and ethical guidelines. Exceptions include: when there is risk of foreseeable harm to yourself or another person, when there is reasonable cause to suspect that a child, elder person, or mentally incompetent person is being abused or neglected, or when a court of law orders the information to be released.

When you come to the Counseling Center for the first appointment, you will be asked to complete a confidential general information form and a consent document which takes about ten minutes.
During your initial appointment with a counselor, you will have a chance to talk about your concerns and ask questions about services that are offered. Based on the information presented, the counselor will discuss with you recommendations that may include referral either on or off campus.
